Strategies for Common Scenarios

Knowing how the optimizer works is one thing. Knowing what to do with the results is another. Here are the most common scenarios points enthusiasts face and how to use the optimizer to make the right call.

”I Have Bank Points and Want to Fly Somewhere”

This is the most common scenario. You have transferable points (Chase UR, Amex MR, Citi TYP, Capital One) and a destination in mind.

Strategy:

1. Search for a few airline programs that fly your route — for a trip to Paris, check Flying Blue, Delta SkyMiles, ANA Mileage Club, and Virgin Atlantic
2. Run the optimizer for each destination program
3. Compare the value change across all transfer options — which source program gets you there with the least value loss?
4. If you have a specific flight in mind, use the Redemption Calculator to compare redemption CPP across programs

Tip

Don’t just optimize for the cheapest points cost. Factor in settlement time too — if you need the points by tomorrow, the cheapest transfer option that takes 5 days doesn’t help.

”Should I Wait for a Transfer Bonus?”

Transfer bonuses (like 25% extra when transferring to an airline partner) can turn a mediocre transfer option into the best one. But timing is tricky.

Strategy:

1. Run the optimizer now to see the baseline costs
2. Note the value change for your preferred transfer option
3. When a bonus appears, re-run the optimizer — Flyga shows active bonuses with a badge on each transfer option
4. Calculate whether the bonus makes a different transfer option better than your current top pick

When to wait:

• You don’t have a specific booking deadline
• Historical data shows bonuses happen regularly for that transfer (many programs run monthly promotions)
• The value difference between transfer options is small enough that a 20-30% bonus would flip the ranking

When to transfer now:

• You have confirmed award availability that might disappear
• The current transfer option already shows strong value
• You need points for a trip with fixed dates

”I Need Points Fast”

Sometimes you need points in a destination program quickly — maybe you found award space that won’t last, or your trip is next week.

Strategy:

1. In the optimizer, use the Near instant filter to only show transfer options with fast settlement
2. Among the fast transfer options, pick the one with the best value change
3. Accept a slightly worse value if it means getting points today vs. waiting 3-5 days

Tip

Most bank-to-airline transfers at 1:1 ratios settle instantly or within hours. Hotel-to-airline transfers tend to be slower (3-7 days). Keep this in mind when award availability is limited.

”Multi-Hop or Direct?”

The optimizer might show a two-hop transfer that’s cheaper than the direct transfer. Is the extra complexity worth it?

Use the direct transfer when:

• The value difference is small (less than 10-15%)
• You need points quickly (each hop adds settlement time)
• You don’t have an account with the intermediate program

Consider the multi-hop transfer when:

• The value difference is significant (20%+ better)
• You have time for both legs to settle
• A bonus promotion on one leg makes the detour dramatically cheaper
• There’s no direct transfer available at all

”Is This Award Booking Worth the Transfer?”

The biggest question. You’ve found award availability, you know the points cost, and you’re about to commit your transferable points. Should you?

Strategy:

1. Look up the cash price of the same flight/hotel booking
2. Open the optimizer, search for the destination program, and enter the points you need
3. Expand the Redemption Calculator and enter the cash price and award taxes
4. Check the redemption CPP — is it above the program’s baseline CPP?

Good deal indicators:

• Redemption CPP is 2× or more above the program’s baseline CPP
• Cash price is high relative to points cost (premium cabin, peak travel dates)
• Award taxes and fees are low

Caution indicators:

• Redemption CPP is below the baseline — you’d get more value saving for a different booking
• Cash price is low (economy during off-peak) — you might be better off just paying cash
• Award taxes are high (some carriers charge $500+ in surcharges on “free” flights)
